While nearly 700 New Jersey school districts are starting the new year with students spending either every day or part of every week remote learning at home, there are a few schools reopening with all in-person classes.
At least 75 districts had been approved to start the 2020-2021 school year entirely in-person as of Friday, state Department of Education officials said. That’s less than 10 percent of the districts that submitted reopening plans to the state.
The districts holding all-in-person classes include large public school districts, including Lakewood, and smaller districts, including Essex Fells, North Wildwood and Riverton. Several charter schools and private schools serving students with disabilities are also on the list.
Another 35 districts have combination plans where a few of their schools or a portion of their students may be attending in-person classes five days a week.
More schools may be added to the list. The state still had a list of about 40 district reopening plans that had not been approved or were sent back with questions, as of Friday.
Even if schools open with in-person classes, they still have the option of switching to all-remote learning if students or teachers test positive for COVID-19.
Many other private schools, Catholic schools and religious institutions are also opening with in-person classes, but they are not on the state’s list because they were not required to submit detailed reopening plans to the state for approval.
