Another heat wave hits North Jersey as temperature set to approach 100 – NorthJersey.com

North Jersey residents should brace for what could be the second heat wave in two weeks as the National Weather Service issued another heat advisory for the region.

The advisory is in effect through 8 p.m. Monday as heat index temperatures are expected to make it feel as though it’s 95 to 100 degrees outside in Hudson, Bergen and Essex counties.

These high temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses so the agency recommends that residents drink plenty of fluids and stay out of the sun as much as possible.

“It’s essentially just to get people aware that there will be exceptional heat for an extended period of time,” meteorologist Matthew Wunsch said.

He pointed out that what constitutes a heat advisory varies by location and that “obviously it’s different in northern New Jersey than it would be in a place like southern Louisiana” but a heat index is two consecutive hours with a heat index of 100 to 105 or two days with a heat index that reaches 95.

Temperatures will be in the low to mid 90s for the next several days but the index will make it feel warmer, he said.

The high for Sunday will be about 95 and then on Monday it will be even hotter with expected highs in the upper 90s. Wednesday drops back to 95 but there won’t be much relief for a few days.

Wunsch said that there isn’t “much in the way of weather” coming during the next few days but a cold front should start to approach on Tuesday afternoon and that is the next best chance for rain.

This month is on track to rank as one of the top-10 warmest Julys in New Jersey since record-keeping started in 1985, according to Rutgers University Professor David A. Robinson, who is also the New Jersey State Climatologist.
