Details Emerge about Nutley Resident’s Rally to Add Armed Guards to Public Schools
NUTLEY, NJ – Details of the ‘Rally to Protect Our Children,’ a citizen organized effort to add armed guards to all Nutley Public Schools are emerging. The rally will take place at the same time as the ‘#NeverAgain March for Our Lives’ taking place in cities across the country.
TAPinto Nutley first broke the news of the rally March 13 in a report about public comments at the March 12 Nutley Board of Education Meeting. In that meeting, Nutley activist Teri Quirk stated that the protest would take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Franklin Avenue. Quirk,along with members of the Nutley Parents Advocacy Network, (NPAN) will rally in front of John H. Walker Middle School at the previously announced time. The rally takes place the same time as the Academic Booster Club History Fair, sporting events, and the annual Scouting for Food drive, all taking place on Franklin Ave. The Nutley Police Department is expected to set up a perimeter to contain the rally and prevent interruptions to traffic on the township’s main road.
Members of NPAN are collecting signatures on a petition to the BOE. The petitions calls for the addition of armed guards to the seven public schools in the Essex County township. It has been reported that the petition has 250 signatures.
A separate group of residents have started their own grassroots effort to keep guns out of Nutley Public Schools. That group currently has 551 signatures on their petition.
On the same day as the BOE Meeting, the superintendent of schools released a security update that outlines security measures that are in place, security measures that were recently added, and details about the security assessment involving the Department of Homeland Security. Locally, the ‘#Never Again March for Our Lives,’ will take place in Newark’s Military Park. The student led and organized ‘March for Our Lives’ demands that congress enact common sense gun laws and advocates for universal background checks.
