Montclair Neighbors Decry Woman Who Called Cops On Black Couple – Montclair, NJ Patch
MONTCLAIR, NJ — More details have emerged about a Montclair couple’s claim that their white neighbor tried to call the police on them during an argument because they’re Black.
The incident took place Monday on Marion Road. It was captured on video, and has been shared widely on social media.
The video shows a woman pacing back and forth in the street and arguing with several people as she calls police on her phone. She’s asked to leave the scene multiple times but refuses.
In a caption to the video, the poster calls the woman “Permit Karen” and accuses her of calling police on him and his wife because they’re Black. He alleges that the incident started over a dispute about whether they had the proper permit to build a stone patio in their backyard.
According to police, the woman said she was “pushed” by the homeowner. However, witnesses – many of whom can be seen on video confronting the woman – said they didn’t see any physical contact.
On Tuesday, about two dozen young people wearing face masks– many of them white – gathered on Marion Road to denounce racism. An onlooker who filmed the rally said it was “peaceful and respectful, only going back and forth on the small street.”
On Friday, the Montclair Police Department issued an update about the incident, noting that no charges have been filed against either party.
The MPD stated:
“On June 29, at approximately 12:23 p.m., police responded to a dispute between neighbors regarding construction being done on the property of a residence on Norman Road. During the dispute, the neighbor who questioned the homeowner states that she was pushed by the homeowner, but witnesses say that they did not observe any physical contact. The department does not have any reports of any of the involved parties having previous disputes with any neighbors. As of this writing, no charges have been filed against anyone involved in this incident, which is still under investigation. No further information is available at this time.”
Fareed Nassor Hayat, the Montclair resident who posted the video, told ABC 7 News that the incident was an example of white entitlement and black hate.
Hayat said that he and his wife, Norrinda, who are both attorneys, have had encounters with the woman before.
“To weaponize the police as she tried to do and use police to enforce her desires … it is white supremacy,” he told ABC 7 News.
“It’s just grown increasingly intense, this desire to interrogate, deputize yourself to make sure I’m following the rules,” Norrinda Hayat said.
