Three Die In Newark Shootings, Including 2 On July 4th – Newark, NJ Patch

NEWARK, NJ — Back-to-back shootings in Newark claimed three lives over the July 4th weekend, authorities said.

On Friday, Laquan T. Nowlin, 32, of East Orange, was fatally shot in the area of Sanford and Lanark Avenue in Newark. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:50 p.m., according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutors said Nowlin was employed as a juvenile detention officer at the Essex County Youth Detention Center.

“At this time there is no indication that the homicide is connected to his employment,” authorities said.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, are investigating the shooting. No arrests have been made as of Saturday.

BROOKDALE AVENUE SHOOTING

On Saturday, two people were fatally shot on the 100-block of Brookdale Avenue in Newark, prosecutors said.

The victims were identified as Nekeya Grady, 36, of Willingboro and Earl Cohen, 46, of Newark. Both were pronounced dead at the scene at 2:58 p.m.

An investigation is active and ongoing. No arrests have been made as of Saturday, prosecutors said.
