Hoboken opens basketball courts, skate park, and playgrounds 

Basketball courts at Church Square Park, Elysian Park, and behind the Multi-Service Center have reopened, with restrictions.

Staff will be on hand to enforce regulations.

The courts under the 14th Street Viaduct will remain closed indefinitely.

Playgrounds reopen on July 2. Children should wear face masks.

North Bergen’s Summer Fun cancelled

Restrictions imposed by Gov. Phil Murphy have forced the cancellation of North Bergen’s Summer Fun 2020 camp

The township will distribute free meals to students who would have enrolled in Summer Fun.

Meals may be picked up at Robert Fulton School, Horace Mann School, the Recreation Center, the preschool in Bruin Stadium, the high school, Lincoln School, Kennedy School, and Franklin School.

The Recreation Department is reviewing what activities will be permitted this summer.

Jersey City to feed youth

Jersey City’s annual Summer Food Service Program has returned to help feed more than 3,000 children who lack healthy food while school is closed.

Through August 21, breakfasts and lunches will be available to children 18 and under.

Stack recovering after fall

On June 18, Union City Mayor Brian Stack fell outside his office, injuring three ribs.

“I just want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their calls and well wishes,” Stack said. Stack worked from home, “in constant contact with my department directors and offices,” he said.

Summer streets come to Hoboken

The Hoboken Business Alliance (HBA) announced its pilot of “Summer Streets” to encourage residents and visitors to shop and eat locally.

The pilot is part of #GoBoken, the HBA’s citywide, summer-long initiative.

Jimenez named Legislator of the Year

New Jersey Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez, who represents the 32nd District, has been named the 2020 Legislator of the Year by the New Jersey Psychological Association.

The award honors a legislator who has sponsored or championed legislation that benefits psychologists and or consumers of psychological services.

Four wounded, one killed in Jersey City shooting

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating the death of a 34-year-old man who was shot in Jersey City. Four other men were also shot.

According to the HCPO, on June 20, at approximately 12:20 a.m., members of the JCPD responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Union Street between Martin Luther King Drive and Ocean Avenue. Officers found multiple shooting victims.

Scott Colclough, 34, of Jersey City, died from his wounds.

Pro-bono internship program for Hoboken businesses

 

Stevens Institute of Technology’s School of Business, in partnership with the City of Hoboken and the Hoboken Business Alliance (HBA), is creating a pro-bono student internship program to help local businesses.

The program will match Hoboken businesses with a Stevens student intern from the School of Business.

Former union officials charged with theft

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office has charged three individuals with theft in excess of $50,000 of pension funds for workers at Star Snacks Company in Jersey City and Gel Spice Company in Bayonne.

Francisco Jara, Elkin Garcia, and Marta Garay are accused of allegedly cashing pension loan checks while retaining a portion of the funds.

The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Quarantine for NY, NJ and CT residents traveling to hot spots

Governors Phil Murphy, Andrew Cuomo and Ned Lamont announced that New Jersey, New York and Connecticut residents traveling to states with high levels of COVID-19 must quarantine for 14 days after returning.

These states include Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Utah & Washington.

IBEW Local 164 donates $50,000 to hospitals

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 164 donated $50,000 in PPE to 17 hospitals in Bergen, Hudson, and Essex counties. The donations consisted of KN95 masks, gowns, hand sanitizer, and food.

Woman faces additional charges after allegedly injuring Jersey City Police Officer

Amandeep Tiwana, 27, of Flushing NY, who critically injured a Port Authority Police Officer in April after striking him with her vehicle while allegedly driving while intoxicated has been charged with Assault By Auto for also injuring a Jersey City Police Officer, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Jersey City Police Officer David Valente was also injured at that time.
