As the coronavirus continues to spread in New Jersey, the availability of testing in the state has expanded. How to get a coronavirus test varies throughout the state, depending on whether it’s from a private medical facility, a state-run testing site, or one operated by a town or county.

Testing kits and other medical supplies needed to collect specimens from sick patients had initially been hard to come by in New Jersey and only people with coronavirus symptoms were being tested. In some places, only medical workers and first responders are able to get a coronavirus test.

Now, more availability has allowed those without symptoms to also be tested including at local Rite Aid and CVS pharmacies. New Jersey has also authorized the state’s 18,000 licensed pharmacists to administer tests. That could include more than 2,000 pharmacies.

Some urgent care centers in New Jersey are offering antibody tests allowing people to find out if they could have some immunity to COVID-19. In those tests, blood is drawn from the arm or through a prick of the finger.

Camden County

Branchburg: Raritan Valley Community College, 118 Lamington Road. COVID-19 drive-thru testing site. Residents can make an appointment by visiting here or call (908) 237-7150. Test site at RVCC will be open Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Additional dates will be offered based on availability of test kits and PPE. Check here for updates. Hamilton: Patient First, 641 US Highway, US-130. Drive-up only. Must have an appointment. Testing is scheduled between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., daily. Appointments may be scheduled by calling 609-568-9383. For most insured patients, there is no out-of-pocket expense for COVID-19 testing. The visit will be submitted to patients’ insurance. Patient First accepts all major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. For self-pay patients, the cost is $90 plus a separate bill from the lab in some cases. The lab will determine what, if anything, it bills the patient.

Hightstown: St. Anthony of Padua Church, 156 Maxwell Ave. Walk-up only, Mercer County residents only. Open Friday afternoons only. Your physician must fax a prescription for testing to 609-630-4031. Trenton: A free, pop-up, walk-up testing site is open in each Trenton ward one day a week. Must make an appointment to be tested. Contact a physician if you want to be tested. Residents without a primary care doctor may call Henry J. Austin Health Center at 609-278-5900 to determine if a test is needed. The health center will serve all patients, including those without insurance. There is no charge for testing at any Mercer County-run site. If a doctor orders a test, the Mercer County health call center will contact residents to schedule a testing time and location.

Trenton: Parking lot across from the County Administration Building at 640 South Broad St. (County-run site moved from the Quaker Bridge Mall in Lawrence.) Appointment-only, drive-up testing. Testing available for asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals. Must have be a resident in Mercer County, have a doctor’s prescription, and schedule an appointment. If you want to be tested, contact your primary health care practitioner. If a test is needed, your doctor will fax a prescription to the Mercer County health call center at 609-630-4031, and the center will contact you to schedule an appointment.

Middlesex County

East Brunswick: MedExpress Urgent Care, 418 State Route 18. Open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Individuals can review the CDC-based screening criteria and call their local MedExpress center to speak with an employee who will go over next steps.

The test is covered by private insurance/Medicare but Passport Health will assess a $50 administration fee to process the test.

Pompton Plains: PM Pediatrics, 562 NJ-23. Must be evaluated by a pediatric expert from PM Pediatrics to determine eligibility, either in-person (ages 0-26 only) or through their telemedicine app (all ages). Randolph: County College of Morris. Dover Chester Road, Randolph, NJ 07869. Morris County residents and Sussex County residents only. Any individual who wants to be tested can call the Southern Jersey Family Medical Centers’ telehealth line at 609-569-4510 between the hours of 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to begin the process of scheduling an appointment. The line to schedule appointments will be open every Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. All residents who call will be pre-screened and if testing is recommended, the individual will be prompted to schedule an appointment and will be given specific instructions regarding time and location of the test.

Somerset County

Residents arriving at the site for testing must have an ID and appointment verification, before entry. No photography or video recording is permitted and vehicle windows are to remain closed until instructed to do otherwise. No emergency services are available at the testing location.

Union County

Elizabeth: CVS Pharmacy, 430 Westfield Avenue. Drive-thru test sites will utilize self-swab tests. Self-swab tests will be available to individuals meeting CDC criteria, in addition to age guidelines. Patients must register in advance at CVS.com beginning Friday, May 22 to schedule an appointment. Patients will be required to stay in their cars and directed to the pharmacy drive-thru window where they will be provided with a test kit and given instructions.
