A man died and seven people, including a child, were injured in a Friday night blaze at a Newark home, authorities said.
Just after 11 p.m. Friday, firefighters responded to a fire at a three-story home on Magazine Street, Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said in a statement. Not long after, a second alarm was called and 70 firefighters responded to douse the flames.
The fire quickly spread from the second floor of the building to the third floor, before spreading to an adjacent building, Ambrose said.
An adult man, whose name was not released, died in the fire. Seven other people, including a child, were taken to University Hospital for treatment. Two of the victims are in critical condition, according to the statement.
Firefighters put the fire under control at 11:54 p.m., the statement said. 15 people were relocated because of the fire.
Both the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Fire Division Arson Unit are investigating the fire.
