Where can I get a coronavirus test in N.J.? Latest list of testing centers, requirements. (April 28, 2020) – NJ.com
As the coronavirus continues to spread in New Jersey, the state is seeking to ramp up testing. How to get a coronavirus test varies throughout the state, depending on whether it’s from a private medical facility, a state-run testing site, or one operated by a town or county.
Testing kits and other medical supplies needed to collect specimens from sick patients has been extremely hard to come by in New Jersey. For the most part, only people with coronavirus symptoms are being tested. In some places, only medical workers and first responders are able to get a coronavirus test.
Symptoms include mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. The CDC recently added more possible symptoms to include now include chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat and a new loss of taste or smell. Read about COVID-19 symptoms.
A swab is inserted deep into the nostril to the sinus cavity. Don’t take fever-reducing medicine prior to testing, such as Tylenol or Advil, for at least six hours before arrival, the New Jersey Department of Health said.
Some urgent care centers in New Jersey are offering antibody tests allowing people to find out if they could have some immunity to COVID-19. In those tests, blood is drawn from the arm or through a prick of the finger.
The multiple-stage coronavirus test process starts with getting a mucus sample and ends with laboratory testing. It could take up to a week or longer for results.
