Statement from Freeholder Cappelli regarding the passing of Martha Wilson – InsiderNJ
The statement below is by Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli Jr. on behalf of the Board of Freeholders regarding the passing of Martha F. Wilson.
“This morning we received the tragic news that one of Camden’s biggest boosters and a crusader for the city’s children passed away. Martha Wilson was a beacon in the city and someone who dedicated her life to making it a better place. Between her and her husband, Sheriff Gilbert “Whip” Wilson, they were two dynamic figures that committed themselves to public service and pouring their heart and soul into the community. It was no secret that Martha has been part of the dynamic team of leaders bringing the Camden School District back to prominence and has gone above and beyond for the students in all the city’s schools.
She played a pivotal role in identifying the current state superintendent and putting policies into place that grew the graduation rate and significantly lowered the dropout rate. She worked to end the high rate of suspensions and double SAT participation amongst the student body. Martha was tireless in ensuring Camden students had the access and opportunity that students from every other school district in the county had and that will be part of her prominent legacy.
She was the cornerstone of our community and someone you could always count on to roll up her sleeves and get the job done. We will miss Martha’s smile, integrity and intelligence, and we will miss her constant presence in the city and at every district event. As we come to terms with her sudden passing, we will keep Martha and Whip’s children, grandchildren and extended family in our thoughts and prayers.”
