5 Fun Events At Essex County Environmental Center: March – Livingston, NJ Patch

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A series of events at the Essex County Environmental Center in Roseland aim to teach children and adults about nature. Here are five of them taking place in March.

FROG POND CLUB

“Frog Pond Club” is for children ages 5 through 9. Uncover and discover ecosystem interactions at the frog pond. Explore with nets, magnifiers and microscopes to investigate what lives at the pond and learn from a naturalist what can be done to protect and conserve the pond inhabitants. Cost is $10 per child per session. Advanced registration, payment and minimum number of participants are required. For information, call 973-228-8776.

ESSEX COUNTY BEEKEEPERS SOCIETY

“Essex County Beekeepers Society” is for adults and children ages 12 and up. The ECBS, a chapter of the NJ Beekeepers Association, is dedicated to teaching new beekeepers how to manage their bees and helping experienced beekeepers to do it better. For those who are interested in keeping honeybees and would like to explore what’s involved, please join the group. Meet in Garibaldi Hall. Call Michael Frey at 973-239-3434 for topics and details. Cost is $10 per child, $12 per adult and free for ECBS and NJBA members. Monthly meeting location may change from time to time.

INTRODUCTION TO PERMACULTURE DESIGN

“Introduction to Permaculture Design” is for adults. Learn the basics of Permaculture Design (ethics, principles, methods and practices) from Wanda Knapik, ecological designer and professor at Seton Hall University. Guided by the principles and practices taught in this course, Knapik works to implement food and water solutions throughout New Jersey and New York. Learn what can be done to help reverse global warming with soil, plant and water solutions for the diverse landscapes of New Jersey. Starting with the three ethics of Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share (distribution of surplus), this course covers the practical realities of the damaged ecosystem in our bioregion and worldwide, and will offer a hopeful view of the future with permaculture design solutions for local regeneration and renewal. These teachings can be applied and integrated into design solutions for food, water, shelter and community-building (in hands-on classes and real-life projects that will be offered at a later date in a 72-hour Permaculture Design Certificate program of which these 6 hours will be applied). FOREST FRIENDS CLUB

“Forest Friends Club” is for children ages 5 years and up. Participants will explore the forest using nets, binoculars, magnifiers, and microscopes to investigate nature in the wooded wetland habitat at the Environmental Center. The goal is to foster an ethic of stewardship and offer an opportunity to take part in hands-on conservation projects. Cost is $10 per child per session.   • Thursday, March 12, 2020 at 4 p.m.

OWL PELLET DISSECTION

“Owl Pellet Dissection” is for children ages 7 to 13. Learn about owls – the beautiful and mysterious silent hunters of the night. Discover what they’re eating and discuss predators and prey and food chain dynamics. Carefully reconstruct the bones found inside owl pellets. Cost is $10 per child.
