Baby Found Unresponsive In Car Near Essex County Park: Police – Newark, NJ Patch

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Police forced their way into a parked car and rescued a baby girl outside an Essex County park on Tuesday morning, authorities said.
According to the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, officers on patrol near Veterans Memorial Park in Newark came across an illegally parked car. When they approached the vehicle, the officers saw a 3-month-old infant inside.
Police made a forced entry into the locked car, finding the child “unresponsive” with “very shallow” breathing.
Emergency responders rushed the infant to University Hospital. She later regained consciousness and doctors expect her to make a full recovery, authorities said.
About 45 minutes after the child was taken to the hospital, the child’s mother returned to the vehicle. Police took her into custody on a municipal court warrant; her name wasn’t released in an initial statement.
The special victim’s unit of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office will be leading an investigation into the incident, authorities said.
Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura commended the involved officers for their “professionalism, alertness and action.”
