Goryeb Children’s Hospital Opens Expanded Pediatric Intensive Care Unit – TAPinto.net
Expansion Funded in Part by Generous Community Members
MORRISTOWN, NJ — To meet the demand for the highly specialized care needed for critically ill or injured children, Atlantic Health System’s Goryeb Children’s Hospital today announced the opening of its expanded Joan and Edward Foley Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
Prior to the renovation and expansion, the PICU held nine beds. Because the unit was virtually always at capacity, some children had to be diverted to other medical centers. The new PICU more than doubled its original size to 13,200-square-feet space and now offers 15 beds.
“Parents come to Goryeb Children’s Hospital for our medical team’s clinical expertise and wealth of specialists, but also because of the exceptional, family-centered care we are known for,” said Walter D. Rosenfeld, MD, Chair of Pediatrics, Goryeb Children’s Hospital and Atlantic Health System. “We want to ensure we are able to help families and children when they are at their most vulnerable, and with the additional beds and clinical space, we will be better able to do so.”
The original unit, which opened nearly 20 years ago, as well as the expansion was funded in part by donations to the Foundation for Morristown Medical Center.
“Our family wants to continue the tradition of support to a wonderful hospital that is so deserving,” said Edward J. “Kim” Foley, III, the son of Joan and Edward Foley for whom the PICU was named. “We’re so happy to be a part of an even larger group of people that are collectively making this happen.”
The pediatric inpatient unit recently added eight beds in a new, adjacent unit, and the Valerie Fund Children’s Center for children who need specialized hematology and oncology treatment will be renovated and expanded in the coming months.
About the Joan and Edward Foley Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
The Joan and Edward Foley Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Goryeb Children’s Hospital provides award-winning care to infants, children and adolescents with life-threatening illness and injury. It’s nursing team received a gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
The fifteen-bed, state-of-the-art PICU provides continuous monitoring of patients’ respiratory, cardiac and neurological functions. Each child’s room is designed with easy access to radiological tests, such as X-ray and ultrasound, and the latest technology that allows for instant review of diagnostic and laboratory results.
Designed with families in mind, amenities include private rooms designed with sleeping accommodations for parents, gaming consoles, a family waiting room area, and separate bathroom and shower.
