Police investigate Newark day care where baby left covered in bruises – NJ.com
Police are investigating an incident at a Newark day care where a mother who picked up her baby earlier this week said she found the six-month-old covered in bruises.
The mother, Anari Ormond, told CBS New York she paid $800 a month to J&A Nursery on Eastern Parkway to take care of her infant Zuri, but on Tuesday, the baby was covered in bruises and scrapes when Ormond picked her up.
The owner of the day care told Ormond she fell while walking down stairs with the baby in her arms, Ormond told the news station. Ormond posted photos of the bruised infant on Instagram and called for the unlicensed nursery to be shut down.
Newark police said the incident is under investigation and Zuri Ormond’s injuries were not fatal.
“The matter is under investigation by the NPD and Essex County Prosecutors Office. The injuries are non-fatal,” Newark Director of Public Safety Anthony Ambrose said in an email to NJ Advance Media.
Ormond and the nursery’s owner did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Any child care center with more than five children below the ages of 13 must have a state license.
The Department of Families and Children did not immediately respond to questions about J&A Nursery, but told CBS New York the day care center is not licensed.
