2-year-old boy killed by dump truck in Sussex County – NJ.com
A 2-year-old boy was struck and killed by a dump truck in Sussex County on Monday.
Police rushed to reports that a pedestrian was hit around 10:40 a.m. on Route 206, near Acorn Street, in Stanhope, according to Sgt. William Heater.
Stanhope and Byram officers found two passing motorists were performing CPR on the boy, police said. Emergency medical crews rushed the child to a local hospital, where he died.
“The driver of the commercial vehicle was not detained and the incident is still under investigation,” Heater said in a statement.
Neighbors told News12 New Jersey that a dump truck hit the child. Video from the scene showed a child’s shoe and toy bike nearby the vehicle, which was cordoned off by yellow tape.
An alert from the borough said the highway was reopened late Monday afternoon following the hours-long closure. Authorities did not immediately release more information.
