New Jersey Human Services to continue providing free Naloxone to Homeless Shelters – Press of Atlantic City

TRENTON — New Jersey Human Services is taking a stand in the ongoing fight against the opioid crisis. The Department is delivering the opioid overdose antidote naloxone for free to participating shelters serving the homeless as part of the department’s ongoing efforts to get naloxone to as many helping hands as possible to save lives.

Throughout the state, 36 shelters are participating in the distribution of naloxone and according to NJ Human Services Commissioner Carole Johnson, ” Nearly 1,200 doses of the nasal spray form of naloxone are being delivered to homeless shelters.” The naloxone delivered to the shelters does not require an individual prescription and is free to those in need.

The shelter initiative follows behind the Department’s June giveaway of 32,000 free doses of naloxone at 174 participating pharmacies throughout the state. The giveaway was considered to be the largest one-day free distribution in the country and Human Services . Johnson states that, ” New Jerseyans responded in overwhelming numbers to the June naloxone giveaway, sending a message that, when given the chance, they want to save lives.”
