MAPLEWOOD, NJ – A 28-year-old Newark resident has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting and stabbing assault a woman in a domestic violence incident on Springfield Avenue in Maplewood Wednesday morning, according to Maplewood Police Chief Jim DeVaul.

Shortly after 7:30 a.m. the Maplewood Police Department received several 911 calls of gunshots in the area of 1701 Springfield Ave. and when officers arrived to the scene they found an adult female victim with multiple gunshot and stab wounds, police said.

DeVaul said the victim was able to motion to officers that Allen had fled through the rear of the parking garage and officers in the area were able to locate Allen by matching the clothing description provided by the witnesses.

Officers stopped Allen on Hilton Avenue and Allen was found in possession of a 22 Cal. handgun and a knife. Allen was taken into custody and through investigation it was later determined that the victim and Allen are known to each other and it was a domestic related incident, DeVaul said.

The victim is receiving treatment at University Hospital in Newark and currently is in stable condition, DeVaul said. Allen was remanded to the Essex County Correctional Facility.

“The Maplewood Police Department would like to extend special thanks to the citizens of our community that assisted in quickly notifying the department and providing accurate information regarding the incident,” DeVaul said. “The Department would also like thank members of the Maplewood Fire Department and EMS Squad for providing speedy medical assistance to the victim.”

DeVaul also extended his gratitude to the officers of the Maplewood Police Department for an excellent job well done. Additional recognition goes to the Maplewood Detectives and support staff that through their professionalism and investigative expertise was able to close the case resulting in the suspect being identified, processed and charged, DeVaul said.

“My thoughts go out to the victim and her children who have been greatly affected by this tragedy. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Take time to offer your support and let them know that they are not alone and there is assistance available.”
