LifeCamp awarded $20,000
The Far Hills Race Meeting Association and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset’s Community Health Partnership recently awarded $20,000 to LifeCamp in Pottersville. The funds will be used to improve the camp’s infirmary and aquatics program. About 550 Newark area youth attend the six-week summer day camp. Through the partnership between the Far Hills Race Meeting Association and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, a total of $885,000 in funds were distributed to five non-profit organizations which serve northern Somerset County. The funds, which will be disbursed over the course of three years, are awarded through proceeds from the Far Hills Race Meeting and are administered through Somerset Health Care Foundation, the hospital’s fundraising arm. In addition to the funds, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset will support the organizations through professional training and development, community health education, support groups and other health care services. Along with LifeCamp, other recipients included the Cancer Support Community of Central New Jersey in Bedminster, The Arc of Somerset County, Bonnie Brae in Liberty Corner and Community in Crisis in Bernardsville. Submission of juried works sought
Co-chairs Shaun Van Doren and Andy Calamaras have announced that the Tewksbury Historical Society (THS) will host its 28th Tewksbury Juried Art Exhibition Saturday, Oct. 12 through Sunday, Oct. 20. The event will take place at the Zion Lutheran Church, Christian Education Building, 16 Miller Ave. in the Oldwick section of Tewksbury with an opening reception on Friday evening, Oct. 11. Awards will be based on “Best in Show,” “Best of Tewksbury,” “Marion Katnack Award Tewksbury Landscape,” plus 1st, 2nd and 3rd place Honorable Mentions in each category. Juried works submission deadline is Friday, Sept. 20 and must be original to the show, not having been submitted to any other THS Juried Art Exhibition. Categories are Natural Environment, Animal Kingdom, Still Life/Interiors, Florals, Abstract/non-objective and Built Environment. BOBO Fridays Food Drive continues Aug. 16
Somerset County Freeholder Deputy Director Patricia Walsh has announced the next “Buy One, Bring One” food collection for county residents in need is Friday, Aug. 16. Look for the blue BOBO Fridays bins at these county locations: Somerset County Administration Building, 20 Grove St., Somerville; Park Commission Headquarters, 355 Milltown Road, Bridgewater; and Lord Stirling Stable, 256 S. Maple Ave., Basking Ridge section of Bernards. Local libraries hosting the bins include the Bound Brook Memorial Library, Bridgewater Library, Manville Library, Mary Jacobs Memorial Library (Rocky Hill), North Plainfield Library, Peapack-Gladstone Library, Somerville Public Library, Warren Township Library and Watchung Library. Towns that have BOBO Friday’s bins in their municipal buildings are Bedminster, Bound Brook, Franklin, Green Brook, North Plainfield and Raritan. Steampunk course begins Sept. 5
A 15-week course on Steampunk will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Thursday, Sept. 5 through Thursday, Dec. 19. Instructor is Christine Myshka. The cost is $496.48. Steampunk is a subgenre of science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. To register, visit www.ducret.edu/steampunk.
Therapeutic Recreation seeks volunteers
The Somerset County Park Commission Therapeutic Recreation Department and Lord Stirling Stable are seeking volunteers to assist with the T.R.A.I.L.S (Therapeutic Recreation Adapted Instruction at Lord Stirling) program Tuesday, Sept. 10, and Wednesday, Sept. 11. Two class options are available each evening from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. and from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. The T.R.A.I.L.S. program consists of 10 weekly riding lessons led by Chris Jones, a seasoned instructor with years of experience in adapted riding. T.R.A.I.L.S. takes place at Lord Stirling Stable, 256 South Maple Ave. in the Basking Ridge section of Bernards and provides an opportunity for children and adults with developmental disabilities to learn the basics of horseback riding at a level adapted to their individual needs. Volunteers need not have equestrian experience but must be age 18 or older (17-year-olds will be considered if they have previous experience with horses) and should have a desire to help individuals enjoy a recreational activity that they otherwise would have no opportunity to experience. Pinkin and McKeon bill now law
To explore how the state can best reuse and recycle aging solar panels, legislation sponsored by Assembly Democrats Nancy Pinkin (D-Middlesex) and John McKeon (D-Essex, Morris) to establish the New Jersey Solar Panel Recycling Commission was recently signed into law by Gov. Phil Murphy. Under the new law (formerly A-4011), the commission will investigate options for recycling and other end-of life management methods for photovoltaic (PV) and other solar energy generation structures and develop recommendations for legislative, administrative or private sector action. The measure was approved by the Assembly and Senate in June by vote tallies of 76-0 and 38-0 respectively. Visit www.assemblydems.com.
Back-to-School Share-A-Haircut Program

Take a trip through ‘Wild New Jersey’
Conservationist and author David Wheeler will present “Wild New Jersey: Nature Adventures in the Garden State” at the East Brunswick Public Library, 2 Jean Walling Civic Center Drive, East Brunswick at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Wheeler, executive director of the nonprofit Conserve Wildlife Foundation (CWF) of New Jersey, will lead the audience on a journey through the diverse wildlife, nature destinations and outdoor activities found in New Jersey. Wheeler is the author of the 2011 book, “Wild New Jersey: Nature Adventures in the Garden State,” and teaches environmental communications at Rutgers. He also is on the board of the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission. His talk is part of the Option Green lecture series presented by the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission in partnership with the library. The program is free.
