Morris Co. College Student Killed In Newark Shooting: PD – Mendham, NJ Patch

RANDOLPH, NJ — A Randolph college student was shot and killed in Newark early Monday morning, Essex County officials said. He was 23.

Jahahd O. Payne was found shot in a car on South 9th Street around 3 a.m., acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens said. He was taken to University hospital where he was pronounced dead about 45 minutes later.

No arrests have been made at this point, Stephens said.

Payne was a college student at the County College of Morris at the time of his death, and was expecting his first child.

“He was an amazing friend, passionate worker and talented artist. He made a difference in the lives of so many. He was expecting his first child later this year and leaves so many with an empty space in his heart,” friend Kelsey Lovenberg wrote on a GoFundMe.

Coworkers also shared loving memories of Payne, with one writing, “Jahahd was one of my favorite coworkers. He had an infectious smile, and a great attitude. He was so proud that he was about to be a father. May he live on through his baby girl!”

So far, the fundraiser has raised $2,100 towards an $8,000 goal.
