Lyons Building Comes Down in Springfield, Setting up New Phase of Re-Development – TAPinto.net
SPRINGFIELD, NJ – After beginning the process of demolition last week, the Lyons Building came down yesterday.
And come down it did. Excavators worked to pull down the remaining sections of the building, as a bulldozer worked to scoop up debris. Demolition did have to be briefly halted, as according to a bystander at the scene who had been there since the demolition started, falling debris from the building did collapse the security fence.
After the collapse of the wooden fence sent debris out onto the street, the town’s first responders in the fire and police department made the call to close off the eastbound lane that had remained open, in order to facilitate a quicker clean up.
At that point, the bulldozer came in to scoop and push the debris back off the street and sidewalk and into the demolition site.
By the afternoon, the building was fully demolished. With its deconstruction, the first major domino has fallen in the renovation of the downtown business corridor. A three-to-four-floor mixed-use development is planned for the site.
Additionally, another project, down at the intersection of Morris Avenue and Church Mall is scheduled to move forward in the next several months to a year.
In both the Morris Avenue and Church Mall building plans, the bottom floor facing the street is zoned for businesses.
