West Orange’s Gregory Elementary PTA Receives Grant to Address Digital Safety – TAPinto.net
WEST ORANGE, NJ — Thanks to a $1,000 grant from the National PTA and Facebook, the Gregory Elementary School PTA in West Orange will host a Digital Families Community Event on Wednesday night that will provide families with an opportunity to have honest conversations about important issues such as digital literacy, safety and citizenship.
Gregory Elementary is the only school in Essex County that was selected to receive a grant through the PTA Connected initiative, which works to empower parents and families with resources and research to equip them to be safer online. The grant recognizes the Gregory Elementary PTA’s leadership and commitment to setting technology ground rules as more kids go digital.
“Our goal is for parents and students to have an open, evolving conversation about how to make positive, safe decisions when using digital tools,” said Jim Accomando, National PTA. “We want parents and families to be able to take charge of their digital life and feel empowered to make smarter decisions about accessing information for good use.”
Wednesday’s workshop invites parents, students, PTA leaders, school administrators, members of the board of education and more to explore digital safety and address concerns surrounding how to raise children in a connected world. The event will feature parent-to-child discussions on topics like password security and safe websites.
As part of National PTA’s new PTA Connected initiative, Facebook’s Digital Families Community Event gives parents access to resources, answers to questions about online safety and digital citizenship, information to help facilitate discussions at home, and the tools to create an action plan for the future.
All materials provided during the Digital Families Community Event will be available in English and Spanish.
The event will be held at 7 p.m. in the Gregory Elementary School cafeteria. For more information, contact Tez Roro at tezutopia@gmail.com.
