Essex County Kips Castle To Host 2018 Holiday Candlelight Tours – Verona, NJ Patch

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Want to learn the fascinating history of a local “hidden gem” in Essex County, while sipping on coffee and hot chocolate and munching on cookies?

On several days in December 2018, Essex County will hold holiday candlelight tours at Kip’s Castle in Verona. During the tours, visitors can view the stained-glass Tiffany windows and learn the history of the historic building.

“Essex County Kip’s Castle Park is a unique historical treasure that gives us a glimpse of our County’s unique past,” Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. said. “We invite you to visit this holiday season and learn about the history of the Tiffany windows that are found throughout the Castle.”

Admission is $10 and includes coffee, hot chocolate and cookies. Registration is required and can be done online at www.eventbrite.com/e/kips-castle-holiday-candlelight-tours-tickets-51528605446. Space is limited and is on a first come, first served basis. Visitors should meet at the front door of the Castle building for the beginning of the tour. Not all areas of the tour are handicapped-accessible.

Tours will take place on the following days at 7 p.m., at 22 Crestmont Road in Verona:

  • Thursdays, December 6, 13, 20 and 27
  • Fridays, December 7, 14, 21 and 28
  • Saturdays, December 8, 15, 22 and 29

Here’s a brief history of the castle, according to Essex County officials:

“Essex County preserved the Castle and 11-acres of property in 2007 using grants from the New Jersey Green Acres Program and the Essex County Recreation and Open Space Trust Fund. Since the 30-room medieval-style castle, carriage house and 11-acre property were added as the 18th park in the historic Essex County Park System, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs has hosted a variety of free community events at the site. In addition, the Castle is the headquarters for the Essex County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs.”
