Cops Resuscitate Newark 2-Year-Old Who Drowned In Family Pool – Newark, NJ Patch

NEWARK, NJ — A pair of Newark police officers resuscitated a drowned 2-year-old girl on Sunday afternoon, stepping in as if the child “was a member of their own family,” authorities said.

The rescue took place around 4:10 p.m. at a home in the city’s North Ward when police received a call about a child that had drowned in the family pool. The toddler wasn’t breathing when the call came in, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.

On arrival, officers Malikul Aziz and Shaquille Johnson immediately began to administer first aid to the child. When the officers cleared her airway, she threw up ingested food and water, authorities said.

Emergency responders soon transported the child to University Hospital where she received additional treatment. She was in stable condition, police reported Sunday.

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose commended the officers for their quick thinking and swift action.

“These officers displayed the character and dedication that every Newark Police Division member is committed to in providing outstanding community service,” he said. “I am proud that these officers stepped in as if this child was a member of their own family. I speak for the entire City of Newark in giving them our most sincere thanks.”
