8-year-old in critical condition after being hit crossing busy street – NJ.com

An 8-year-old girl was seriously hurt when she was struck by a vehicle as she crossed a busy intersection in Irvington Wednesday.

The driver remained at the scene after the girl was hit on Springfield Avenue, near Maple Avenue, according to Irvington Public Safety Director Tracy Bowers.

Emergency crews rushed the child to University Hospital in Newark where she was listed in critical, but stable condition, Bowers said. It appears she was crossing alone and police were able to inform a parent.

The incident occurred around 3:20 p.m. on a stretch of road with apartments and stores.

Township police and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office were investigating at the scene late Wednesday afternoon.
