(HACKETTSTOWN, NJ) — Centenary Stage Company’s family holiday spectacular, Annie continues in the Lackland Performing Arts Center at 715 Grand Ave. Hackettstown, NJ with performances running until December 9. Based on the popular comic strip by Harold Gray, Annie has become a worldwide phenomenon and was the winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The beloved book and score by Tony Award winners, Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin, features some of the greatest musical theatre hits ever written, including “Tomorrow.” With equal measures of pluck and positivity, little orphan Annie charms everyone’s hearts despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. She is determined to find the parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage that is run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan. With the help of the other girls in the Orphanage, Annie escapes to the wondrous world of NYC. In adventure after fun-filled adventure, Annie foils Miss Hannigan’s evil machinations… and even befriends President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. She finds a new home and family in billionaire, Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary, Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.
Directed by Broadway, film and television veteran Michael Blevins, the cast features over 60 performers ranging from professional guest artists to local talent and includes students of the Centenary University’s theatre department and students of Centenary Stage Company’s Young Performers Workshop. Centenary Stage Company’s annual family holiday spectacular serves as a celebration of all of Centenary Stage Company’s programming, by combining the talents of professional guest artists, local talent, Centenary University faculty, staff, students and students of the Young Performers Workshop programming. The principle cast features Osborn Focht as Oliver Warbucks, Liz McConahay as Miss Hannigan, Justin Boccitto as Rooster Hannigan, Alycia Kunkle as Grace Farrell and Gracie Nagle as Annie.
Performances this week include Thursday, November 29 at 7:30pm; Friday, November 30 at 8:00pm; Saturday, December 1 at 8:00pm and Sunday, December 2 at 2:00pm. All performances of Annie will be held in the Sitnik Theatre of the Lackland Performing Arts Center at 715 Grand Ave. Hackettstown, NJ.
Ticket prices are $29.50 for adults and $20.00 for children under 12 for matinee and Friday evening performances. Saturday evening performances are $32.00 for adults and $20.00 for children under 12. Thursday evening performances are $29.50 for ALL SEATS with a Buy One/Get One Rush Ticket Special when purchased at the Centenary Stage Company box office in person beginning at 5:30pm. Playhouse 22 Presents “A Christmas Carol”
(EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ) — Playhouse 22 will be presenting its annual production of A Christmas Carol from December 7 – 16. Directed and adapted by Tony Adase, A Christmas Carol at Playhouse 22 is based on the Charles Dickens’ piece by the same name. It is the story of a miserable miser who learns to keep Christmas in his heart with the help of several ghostly visitations. A show for the whole family, the Playhouse 22 production is celebrating its 23rd annual year at the theater.
The Ritz Theatre Co. Presents “Scrooge, The Musical”
(HADDON TOWNSHIP, NJ) — The Ritz Theatre Co. will present its annual holiday classic Scrooge, The Musical from December 7th through December 23rd. This show is a tradition for families across our region, and is fun for all ages. Led by Producing Artistic Director Bruce A. Curless, Bruce plays the title character of Ebenezer Scrooge. This will be the twenty-third year and final year that Bruce dons the wool cap and is chased through visions of his life by three famous ghosts!
United Youth of New Jersey To Present “Harlem Renaissance: Another Black Wall Street”
(ELIZABETH, NJ) — United Youth of New Jersey (UYNJ) will present “Harlem Renaissance: Another Black Wall Street,” the ninth in the nonprofit’s series of acclaimed plays detailing pivotal moments in African American history, on February 2, 2019 at 3:00pm at the Ritz Theater located at 1148 E Jersey St. in Elizabeth.
Rutgers Theater Company Presents 2018 Playwrights Festival
(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) — Rutgers Theater Company will present a pair of plays during its Playwrights Festival, which runs December 6-8 in the Philip J. Levin Theater in New Brunswick. The plays are original works by their MFA playwrights, performed by the graduating company. The festival includes performances of My Town by Nathan Maxwell and Marie by Jeana Scotti.
REVIEW: “Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn” at Paper Mill Playhouse
One man’s ambition is comfortable yet to another it is anathema. This is the simplest way to convey the central theme of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn – now playing at Papermill Playhouse. The show is a rich, effervescent, beautiful, fun, musical that is well worth booking tickets for. It enthralled my phone addicted 13 year-old and earned a shout out on Instagram – high praise in and of itself.
REVIEW: “A Doll’s House, Part 2” at George Street Playhouse
For well over a century the world has been wondering what ever happened to Nora Helmer from Henrik Ibsen’s classic play A Doll’s House. Nora was a woman during the 19th century in male dominated Norway when women could not sign contracts without their husband’s permission. She challenged this law, essentially committing forgery. And, even though she committed a crime for the purpose of saving her husband’s life, her actions wound up destroying her marriage when someone tried to blackmail her.

(HOBOKEN, NJ) — Mile Square Theatre, Hudson County’s leading professional theatre, revives its beloved production of It’s a Wonderful Life: a live radio play, by Joe Landry. Mile Square Theatre becomes a live recording studio in the golden age of radio, and MST theatre goers become the studio audience as WMST “goes on air” to broadcast Frank Capra’s popular holiday story. CoLab Arts’ “Life, Death, Life Again: Children Sentenced To Die In Prison” At Monmouth University Center For The Arts
On stage December 5 at Monmouth University Center for the Arts, Elizabeth Weill-Greenberg’s theatre piece “Life, Death, Life Again” shares the stories of individuals sentenced to die in prison for their violent crimes committed when they were juveniles, as well as the grandson of a woman who was murdered by a teenager. A coLAB Arts production, presented in Monmouth University’s Pollak Theatre, this docu-play features real stories and the words of those that have lived them. Join Jesse and Dave at rehearsal as they talk to the creators behind this challenging show.

There’s something absolutely wonderful about A Christmas Carol, the holiday classic penned by Charles Dickens in 1843. The story has been told in countless films, plays, and cartoons. It is performed on stages around the world towards the end of every season and is universally loved. But imagine being one of the many actors of a certain age who get typecast as Scrooge and are forced to relive that nightmarish night over and over again each year.
