Axelrod's Rising Stars Youth Performing Arts Program Presents "Peter Pan"

(OCEAN TOWNSHIP, NJ) —  A family musical that’s perfect for the holiday season, Peter Pan is flying onto the Axelrod stage December 8-16. Axelrod’s award-winning Rising Stars Youth Performing Arts program presents one of Broadway’s timeless classics in a fully staged production directed by Lisa Goldfarb with musical direction by Randy Hurst and choreography by Wendy Roman.  

Based on J.M. Barrie’s classic tale with beloved characters Peter Pan, Tinkerbell and Captain Hook, Peter Pan features an unforgettable score by “Moose” Charlap and Jule Styne with lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green that includes such iconic songs as “I’m Flying,” “I’ve Gotta Crow,” “I Won’t Grow Up,” and “Never Never Land.”

Led by Perry Award-winning actor Michael Patierno, in the dual role of Captain Hook and Mr. Darling, and popular regional theater actress Gabrielle Trumbull, the cast features 36 young actors from Monmouth and Ocean counties ranging in age from 8-19 years old. 

Says Goldfarb, “The cast and I are excited to welcome two polished, professional, adult actors to join this Rising Stars production of Peter Pan. They’re not only raising the caliber of our production, but also mentoring our young performers and setting great professional examples.

Audiences at the Axelrod are known to rave about the outstanding quality of the youth productions, and many continue to come to the performances long after their children have grown.

Flying sequences will be handled by “Flying by Foy”, the most prolific and widely respected theatrical flying service in the world. Foy provides flying effects, Aereography® and state-of-the-art automation for Broadway shows, London’s West End, professional and not-for-profit theatres, feature films and television productions worldwide.

The role of Peter Pan will be shared by Claudia Tawil and Victoria Bahary, both of Ocean Township. Other cast members include Mara Campolatarro (Rumson) and Jordan Zelen (Tinton Falls) sharing the role of Wendy Darling; Christopher Abt (Howell) as John Darling; Sophia Bahary (Ocean) as Michael Darling; Natalie Rosati (Atlantic Highlands) as Tiger Lily, and Courtney Mormino and Lily Schechter (both Manalapan) sharing the role of Jane Darling.

The production also features set design by Fred Sorrentino, lighting by Jim Lyle, costumes by Joanne DeLuca and Donna Silogy-Gigante of Playtime Costumes and props by Sue Bloir.

Show dates are December 8 and 15 at 7:30pm, and December 9 and 16 at 1:00pm and 5:00pm. Tickets prices are: Adults and Seniors $25 and Students $22.  They can be purchased online. APAC is fully accessible and offers free, on-site parking, and is located at 100 Grant Ave., Deal Park, NJ. 

The Axelrod Performing Arts Center’s Rising Stars Youth Performing Arts Program, under the direction of Youth Director Lisa Goldfarb, is a musical theater program open to young people ages 8-19 from Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The program teaches the basic fundamentals of musical theater including singing, acting, dancing and staging. The program produces two (2) publicly-presented musicals per year; one in winter and one in spring, overseen by the Axelrod’s professional theater staff. 

The Axelrod Performing Arts Center is New Jersey’s newest professional theater, offering main-stage musicals with casts and production teams from New York City and beyond as well as original concerts throughout the year. The Axelrod fosters artistic excellence by showcasing varied and distinct cultural programs that enrich the imaginative, intellectual, and creative soul, while cultivating an appreciation of diverse communities through the pursuit of the arts. 


Playhouse 22 Presents “A Christmas Carol”
(EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ) — Playhouse 22 will be presenting its annual production of A Christmas Carol from December 7 – 16.  Directed and adapted by Tony Adase, A Christmas Carol at Playhouse 22 is based on the Charles Dickens’ piece by the same name.  It is the story of a miserable miser who learns to keep Christmas in his heart with the help of several ghostly visitations.  A show for the whole family, the Playhouse 22 production is celebrating its 23rd annual year at the theater.  


The Ritz Theatre Co. Presents “Scrooge, The Musical”
(HADDON TOWNSHIP, NJ) — The Ritz Theatre Co. will present its annual holiday classic Scrooge, The Musical from December 7th through December 23rd.  This show is a tradition for families across our region, and is fun for all ages. Led by Producing Artistic Director Bruce A. Curless, Bruce plays the title character of Ebenezer Scrooge. This will be the twenty-third year and final year that Bruce dons the wool cap and is chased through visions of his life by three famous ghosts!


United Youth of New Jersey To Present “Harlem Renaissance: Another Black Wall Street”
(ELIZABETH, NJ) — United Youth of New Jersey (UYNJ) will present “Harlem Renaissance: Another Black Wall Street,” the ninth in the nonprofit’s series of acclaimed plays detailing pivotal moments in African American history, on February 2, 2019 at 3:00pm at the Ritz Theater located at 1148 E Jersey St. in Elizabeth.


Rutgers Theater Company Presents 2018 Playwrights Festival
​​​​​​​(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) — Rutgers Theater Company will present a pair of plays during its Playwrights Festival, which runs December 6-8 in the Philip J. Levin Theater in New Brunswick.  The plays are original works by their MFA playwrights, performed by the graduating company. The festival includes performances of My Town by Nathan Maxwell and Marie by Jeana Scotti.


Gas Lamp Players Presents A Christmas Carol: the Musical
(GLEN RIDGE, NJ) — Gas Lamp Players presents its annual Main Stage production A Christmas Carol: the Musical, a family friendly holiday musical adaptation of the beloved Charles Dickens story. The production features a multi-generational cast of 105 adults, teens and children from Essex County.  Four performances will take place from December 7 through December 9.

(HOBOKEN, NJ) — Mile Square Theatre, Hudson County’s leading professional theatre, revives its beloved production of It’s a Wonderful Life: a live radio play, by Joe Landry. Mile Square Theatre becomes a live recording studio in the golden age of radio, and MST theatre goers become the studio audience as WMST “goes on air” to broadcast Frank Capra’s popular holiday story. On stage December 5 at Monmouth University Center for the Arts, Elizabeth Weill-Greenberg’s theatre piece “Life, Death, Life Again” shares the stories of individuals sentenced to die in prison for their violent crimes committed when they were juveniles, as well as the grandson of a woman who was murdered by a teenager. A coLAB Arts production, presented in Monmouth University’s Pollak Theatre, this docu-play features real stories and the words of those that have lived them. Join Jesse and Dave at rehearsal as they talk to the creators behind this challenging show.


An Actor’s Carol
There’s something absolutely wonderful about A Christmas Carol, the holiday classic penned by Charles Dickens in 1843.  The story has been told in countless films, plays, and cartoons.  It is performed on stages around the world towards the end of every season and is universally loved.  But imagine being one of the many actors of a certain age who get typecast as Scrooge and are forced to relive that nightmarish night over and over again each year.

In this musical based on the beloved Bing Crosby/Fred Astaire film, Jim Hardy leaves behind the hustle and bustle of showbiz for a quiet life on a Connecticut farm. Jim’s agrarian efforts are a flop, but things start looking up when he falls for a talented schoolteacher, and together they infuse their sleepy rural setting with some Broadway razzle-dazzle. Fresh from a Broadway run, this heartwarming, toe-tapping production features more than 20 classic songs from the Berlin catalog, including “Easter Parade,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “Steppin’ Out with My Baby,” and “White Christmas.”
