State Theatre Presents Rodgers & Hammerstein's "The King and I"

(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) — State Theatre New Jersey presents the Tony Award®-winning show, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I on Friday, December 14 at 8:00pm and Saturday, December 15 at 2:00pm and 8:00pm.  Set in 1860’s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. Tickets range from $35-$98.

Two worlds collide in this “breathtaking and exquisite” (The New York Times) musical, based on the 2015 Tony Award®-winning Lincoln Center Theater production. One of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s finest works, The King and I boasts a score that features such beloved classics as “Getting To Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance,” and “Something Wonderful.”

The cast includes Angela Baumgardner as Anna Leonowens and Pedro Ka’awaloa as the King of Siam, with DeAnna Choi as Lady Thiang, Bern Tan as Kralahome, Paulina Yeung as Tuptim, Dongwoo Kang as Lun Tha, Timothy Matthew Flores as Prince Chulalongkorn, Hayden Bercy as Louis Leonowens, and Stanton Morales as Captain Orton/Sir Edward Ramsey.

The ensemble includes Catrina Teruel Clark, Raymond Dimaano, Atsushi Eda, Cj Fernando, Jenna Ho, Masumi Iwai, Anjali Kanter, Akina Kitazawa, Keiji Kubo, Kylie Kuioka, Catherine Landeta, Jee Heng Liao, Linder Sutton, Tsubasa Ogawa, Soraya Patoonsittichai, Trevor Roderick, Richel Mari Ruiz, Pepita Salim, Annie Sherman, Kayla Rachel Teruel, Matheus Ting, Hiroko Uchino, Dax Valdes, and Eliot Waldvogel.

The Ritz Theatre Co. Presents “Scrooge, The Musical”
(HADDON TOWNSHIP, NJ) — The Ritz Theatre Co. will present its annual holiday classic Scrooge, The Musical from December 7th through December 23rd.  This show is a tradition for families across our region, and is fun for all ages. Led by Producing Artistic Director Bruce A. Curless, Bruce plays the title character of Ebenezer Scrooge. This will be the twenty-third year and final year that Bruce dons the wool cap and is chased through visions of his life by three famous ghosts!


United Youth of New Jersey To Present “Harlem Renaissance: Another Black Wall Street”
(ELIZABETH, NJ) — United Youth of New Jersey (UYNJ) will present “Harlem Renaissance: Another Black Wall Street,” the ninth in the nonprofit’s series of acclaimed plays detailing pivotal moments in African American history, on February 2, 2019 at 3:00pm at the Ritz Theater located at 1148 E Jersey St. in Elizabeth.


Rutgers Theater Company Presents 2018 Playwrights Festival
​​​​​​​(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) — Rutgers Theater Company will present a pair of plays during its Playwrights Festival, which runs December 6-8 in the Philip J. Levin Theater in New Brunswick.  The plays are original works by their MFA playwrights, performed by the graduating company. The festival includes performances of My Town by Nathan Maxwell and Marie by Jeana Scotti.


Gas Lamp Players Presents A Christmas Carol: the Musical
(GLEN RIDGE, NJ) — Gas Lamp Players presents its annual Main Stage production A Christmas Carol: the Musical, a family friendly holiday musical adaptation of the beloved Charles Dickens story. The production features a multi-generational cast of 105 adults, teens and children from Essex County.  Four performances will take place from December 7 through December 9.


Mile Square Theatre To Move “The Net Will Appear” To 59E59 In NYC
(HOBOKEN, NJ) — Mile Square Theatre, Hudson County’s leading professional theatre, moves its hit world premiere production of The Net Will Appearto the Off-Broadway venue 59E59 Theater, in a co-production with The Collective NY. The Net Will Appear is a heartwarming comedy of an unlikely friendship between the feisty 9-year-old Rory and her septuagenarian neighbor Bernard, played by film, TV, and stage actor Richard Masur.  The run will go from December 5 through December 30.


CoLab Arts’ “Life, Death, Life Again: Children Sentenced To Die In Prison” At Monmouth University Center For The Arts
On stage December 5 at Monmouth University Center for the Arts, Elizabeth Weill-Greenberg’s theatre piece “Life, Death, Life Again” shares the stories of individuals sentenced to die in prison for their violent crimes committed when they were juveniles, as well as the grandson of a woman who was murdered by a teenager. A coLAB Arts production, presented in Monmouth University’s Pollak Theatre, this docu-play features real stories and the words of those that have lived them. Join Jesse and Dave at rehearsal as they talk to the creators behind this challenging show.


An Actor’s Carol
There’s something absolutely wonderful about A Christmas Carol, the holiday classic penned by Charles Dickens in 1843.  The story has been told in countless films, plays, and cartoons.  It is performed on stages around the world towards the end of every season and is universally loved.  But imagine being one of the many actors of a certain age who get typecast as Scrooge and are forced to relive that nightmarish night over and over again each year.

(MILLBURN, NJ) — Paper Mill Playhouse’s production of Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn is currently on stage and will run through December 30th. In this musical based on the beloved Bing Crosby/Fred Astaire film, Jim Hardy leaves behind the hustle and bustle of showbiz for a quiet life on a Connecticut farm. Jim’s agrarian efforts are a flop, but things start looking up when he falls for a talented schoolteacher, and together they infuse their sleepy rural setting with some Broadway razzle-dazzle. Fresh from a Broadway run, this heartwarming, toe-tapping production features more than 20 classic songs from the Berlin catalog, including “Easter Parade,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “Steppin’ Out with My Baby,” and “White Christmas.”
