Still Need to Register to Vote? Here’s How to in South Orange and Maplewood

Register to Vote: The Village Clerk’s Office will be having a Late Night Voter Registration Drive on 

Oct. 16 from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

How to Register

The registrant must download and complete a Voter Registration Application. You can print a registration application here, fill out required data, and mail it to the Commissioner of Registration office in the county where you reside. The Commissioner of Registration cannot accept faxed copies or electronic transmission of a voter registration form since an original signature is required.

The registration deadline to vote at the next election is 21 days prior to Election Day. Contact the Village Clerk’s Office for more information.

Who Can Register?

To register in New Jersey you must be:

  • A United States citizen

  • At least 18 years old by the next election

  • A resident of the county for 30 days before the election

How Can I Confirm That I Am a Registered Voter?

Where to Register

Registration Application Forms are available from the New Jersey Division of Elections, the Commissioner of Registration office in the County where you live, or from your Municipal Clerk. Registration forms are also available at Division of Motor Vehicle offices.

You can also register to vote at the same time you are applying for assistance or service at the following agencies:

  • NJ Medical Assistance and Health Services Program

  • WIC (Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infant and Children)

  • Work First NJ Programs

  • Division of Developmental Disabilities

  • Office of Disability Services, Department of Human Services, Public Offices

  • Armed Forces of the United States Recruitment Offices

  • Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services – Department of Labor

  • Commission of the Blind and Visually Impaired

  • County Welfare Agency or County Board of Social Services

Voter Registration & Voting for College Students

College students register to vote in New Jersey by following the standard application process: every prospective voter must submit a voter registration application.

You can register to vote if:

  • You are a United States citizen

  • You will be 18 years of age by the next election

  • You will be a resident of the State and county 30 days before the election

  • You are not currently serving a sentence, probation or parole because of a felony conviction

If you are in college, you have the option to register from your college address or your parent’s address. There are good reasons for registering and voting at either residence, but keep in mind, the final choice is yours.

The registration deadline to vote is 21 days prior to Election Day. Once registered at your college address, you will receive a sample ballot about 1 week before the election that will indicate where your polling place is.

Vote By Mail Applications

In New Jersey, any voter can now vote by mail in any election. You do not need a reason to Vote by Mail. Don’t feel like going to the polls? Simply vote by mail. Now there is “no excuse” not to vote!

A voter may vote by mail by completing the Application for Vote by Mail Ballot, and returning the application to the County Clerk.

To receive your ballot by mail, the application must be received by the County Clerk 7 days prior to the election. A voter may also apply in person to the County Clerk until 3 p.m. the day before the election.

The County Clerk cannot accept faxed or emailed copies of an Application for Vote by Mail Ballot, unless you are a Military or Overseas Voter, since an original signature is required.

Your vote by mail ballot must be received by the County Board of Elections no later than 8 p.m. on Election Day. For more information contact the Village Clerk’s Office via email or call 973-378-7715, ext. 1.

On Election Day the Village Clerk’s Office can be contacted between the hours of 6 a.m. – 8 p.m.

MAPLEWOOD

Important Election Information 

If you have moved into Maplewood recently and have not changed your voter registration, October 16th is the last day to register to vote in the November election. Registration forms can be obtained from the following: 

  • The Maplewood Township Clerk, 574 Valley St.

  • www.nj.gov/state/elections

  • A Motor Vehicle Agency

  • By calling 1-877-NJ-VOTER(1-877-658-6837)

  • Mail or deliver completed form to Essex County Commissioner of Registration, Hall of Records, 465 Martin Luther King, Jr., Newark.

The Maplewood Township Clerk’s office will be open until 9 p.m. on October 16, for residents wishing to register to vote.

Mail-in ballots can be requested by Tuesday, October 30. Even if you are registered, you must correct any information that has changed since you last voted.  If you did not vote in the last election, you should check your status.
