Nutley Police Department Re-Accredited by NJ Assoc. of Chiefs of Police

NUTLEY, NJ –  At Tuesday’s Nutley Board of Commissioners meeting, Ken Natson, Accreditation Manager for the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police, presented Nutley Chief of Police Thomas Strumolo with a certificate of re-accreditation.

Only a small percentage of departments in the state receive this status. According to Strumolo, the process for the current accreditation started under Chief Holland’s tenure in the department. The process is cumbersome, and has been described by public safety directors in other communities as something like a tax audit – the association goes through everything, policies, procedures, and reports.

The accreditation statues affects things like how the department will be viewed by insurance companies, accreditation usually means lower risk. The certificate is also a “don’t tread on me” flag. Departments that are accredited are subject to much fewer frivolous lawsuits than those that are not.
