Fatal accident in Lakewood with multiple injuries under investigation – wobm.com

There is an investigation ongoing into an accident that occurred in Lakewood Township on Friday night that later claimed the life of a passenger in one of the vehicles, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer.

Lakewood Police were first on the scene Friday night around 8:20 pm between South Lake Drive and East Lake Park Drive.

Through the preliminary stages of the investigation, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and Lakewood Police learned that Mordechai Berkowitz, 20, of Lakewood Township was driving eastbound in a 2018 Chevrolet Impala along South Lake Drive when he drove over the double yellow line and struck a 2017 Toyota Rav-4 head-on.

The Toyota Rav-4 was driven by 35-year-old Maria Flores-Moreno of Jackson Township and she had a passenger in her front seat, Juana Lopez-Hernandez, 44, a citizen of Mexico.

Prosecutor Billhimer said that Berkowitz was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune City where he was treated for his injuries and later released, while Flores-Moreno was brought to JSUMC as well, and is listed in stable condition as of Monday evening.

Tragically, Lopez-Hernandez, who was brought to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood following the accident, was pronounced deceased at the hospital a short time later.
