Herbert Saint Aubyn Bell Obituary (1958 – 2022) – Newark, NJ – Legacy.com
Herbert Saint Aubyn Bell also known as Bubby and Bello made his entrance into this world on June 17, 1958, born to Gertrude and the late Wesley Bell, in the district of Cotton Tree in the rainy Parish of Portland on the beautiful island of Jamaica.
Herbert shared a close relationship growing up with all of his siblings, especially with his older brothers. We enjoyed playing marbles, gig (top) and cricket in the street. Countless times, vehicles driving along the country road would often times give way to us batting and bowling in the game that knitted our lives together way beyond our sheared DNA.
He received his basic education at the Tranquility All-Age School and then moved on to the Buff Bay High School. He excelled and proudly represented his school in both cricket and football (Soccer), as he was an outstanding and dedicated player. In the Summer of 1974 he graduated from High School and not long after he gained employment with the Ministry of Agriculture. While working there he continued playing cricket and football at the club level within the parish. His tenure at the ministry ended when he migrated to the United States in 1979 and setting up residence in East Orange, New Jersey.
After arriving in New Jersey he continued his love of playing football wearing the “white, red, green and gold”, the colors of Orange Kickers, until the mid-80s. Bello as he is affectionately called was a jovial person and made numerous friends at work and also at play. You see, my brother was a very warm and friendly person. I can remember on numerous occasions while out driving with him, he would be saying “hi” or “what’s up” to people he didn’t even know. I would smile and ask him, “do you know them?” and his response most of the time would be, “no.” While reminiscing since his passing, someone said, “Bubby was an awesome guy. He was funny and acted silly at times with a twinkle in his eyes. He was always reaching out to others and ensured that others who had lost touch regained connection. However, whenever he calls, make sure you have the time because if you allow him he will talk forever.
While working with the Irvington School Security staff he attended Essex County College where he earned an Associate Degree in Electronics in 2003. With the scarcity of work within his field of study and wanting to provide for his family he continued working with the Irvington School Security staff for the 20 plus years, until the time of his passing. At each school where he provides security, he was loved, respected, and admired by both academic staff and students, past and present. Tears flowed when news of his sudden passing was announced.
Herbert was a member of the Buff Bay Past Student Association and he believed in helping the younger generation. He loved the sound of reggae music and was in his best mood while dancing to the rhythms. He had his own musical set built and often times played for the Past Student Association’s Fundraising events.
Over the years he also played his music at the countless summer cookout in his backyard where his family and friends would often gather. Herbert was a family man. He loved, loved, loved his family. He loved Maureen: he loved his children; he loved his grandchildren. His family was his rock and they brought out the best in him.
Herbert shared a special bond with “mama”. He always calls to check in on her, never failing to end the conversation without saying “I love you”. He was her fourth born and always look forward to sharing their closely dated birthdays 11 days apart.
Herbert’s walk on his journey in this life ended on January 4, 2022. He was preceded in death by his father Wesley and brothers Lindon and James.
Herbert’s memory will be cherished always by: Maureen, his loving partner; mother, Gertrude; children, Debbie, Leon, Shekima, Laverne, Tamor, Shannon and Joshua. Four sisters, Beverly, Yvonne, Jean and Marlene; five brothers, Horace, Emerson, Eric, Kenneth and Alfred; Sixteen grandchildren and one great-grand child; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and too many other relatives and friends to name.
Herbert has gone too soon and he has left a void in many hearts today, that can only be filled with the precious memories that we will all forever hold dear.
