Essex County, NJ – Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. has scheduled the following events this week:

Essex County Open House

Event #1: On Saturday, June 1st, County Executive DiVincenzo invites the public to attend the 16th Annual Essex County Open House at Essex County Turtle Back Zoo. The carnival-like event, which includes free admission to Turtle Back Zoo, combines games and activities to entertain and provide information to raise public awareness about the programs and services provided by Essex County. Free and ample parking is available on-site and at the Essex County South Mountain Park-N-Ride facility. Turtle Back Zoo admission and rides on the miniature train are free. Admission to the miniGOLF Safari is $10 for children and $12 for adults. Carousel and Pony rides are $2 each. Feed sticks at the Outback Adventure Aviary are $2. Fees also apply at the Treetop Adventure Course and Paddle Boating on the Orange Reservoir. For more information, please call 973-621-4400.

Essex County Donald M. Payne, Sr. School of Technology Dedication

Event #2: On Monday, June 4th, County Executive DiVincenzo and the Essex County Schools of Technology District will dedicate the Essex County Donald M. Payne, Sr. School of Technology. Named for the late Congressman Donald M. Payne, Sr., the school will have up-to-date facilities that can adequately support the advanced and ever-changing curriculum and allows the district to expand its academic and extracurricular activities. The shiny glass, sturdy brick and outfitted classrooms were the result of many people from State and County government and the School District working cooperatively. Scheduled to join the County Executive are Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr., U.S. Senator Robert Menendez, Lt. Governor Sheila Y. Oliver, NJ Senate President Stephen Sweeney, NJ Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and former Governor Chris Christie, as well as local elected and school officials.

Essex County Verona Park Fishing Derby

Event #3: On Wednesday, June 6th, County Executive DiVincenzo and the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs invite the public to participate in the Essex County Verona Park Fishing Derby. This was rescheduled because of inclement weather. The derby is free and open to children ages 15 and younger. All children must be accompanied by an adult and bring their own fishing pole, bait, bucket and chair. Prizes in various age categories for catching the first and most fish will be awarded at the conclusion of each derby. For additional information, please call 973-735-6228.

The derby is free and open to children ages 15 and younger. All children must be accompanied by an adult and bring their own fishing pole, bait, bucket and chair. Valerie Fund Walk and JAG 5K Run in Essex County Verona Park

Event #5: On Saturday, June 9th, County Executive DiVincenzo invites the public to support the Valerie Fund Walk and JAG Physical Therapy 5K Run in Essex County Verona Park. Proceeds will be used to support the comprehensive care of children with cancer and blood disorders. For more information on the Walk or 5K Run, visit TheValerieFund.org. A new special feature this year is refreshments provided by a variety of food trucks.
