Public pool reopens after children get sick in Maplewood, NJ – Floridanewstimes.com

Maplewood, Essex County (WABC)-Authorities say Maplewood Township’s public pool returned on Monday after a weekend incident in which parents allegedly sickened some children.

Several parents posted on Facebook on Saturday night and Sunday morning, stating that the children had to go to the emergency room after an incident in the community pool on Saturday afternoon.

A failure of the pool’s filtration system released sediment and turned the water greenish-brown. The incident was accompanied by a strong odor.

According to parents’ social media posts, some children were vomiting, burning eyes and throat, and helpless.

One parent posted that his child had to spend the night in the hospital.

Township issued the following statement on Sunday:

“As I mentioned earlier, a failure occurred in the pool yesterday afternoon and sediment was released. This failure is in the filtration system and is regularly monitored.

As a result, some people suddenly smelled chlorine when they restarted the filter. We deeply apologize for this malfunction. We are working with a third-party vendor, CFM, to test and retroactively evaluate yesterday’s malfunction.

In addition, our health doctors contact families affected by the dysfunction and we work with them. “

The statement further states that the issue has been fixed and surveillance has shown that the pool is again safe for swimming.

“This morning (Sunday) we conducted an additional two pool chemistry level tests, standard behavioral tests / evaluations, and additional third-party testing to ensure that the pools were within normal limits. . The chemistries of the pool are within normal limits.

We work closely with third-party contractors to pinpoint what happened and know why it happened. In addition, we have taken all necessary steps to resolve the issue and, based on the contractor’s actions and follow-up procedures, ensure that this will never happen again.

As a result, the pool will open today and increase the number of daily standardized tests and monitors to ensure the safety of all residents and patrons.

We apologize once again for this malfunction that occurred yesterday (Saturday). “
