Encompass Rehabilitation Hospital offering new ways to recovery – wobm.com

Injuries happen and sometimes very serious injuries, illnesses and accidents of all kinds take place.

When you are on the mend, you start physical therapy or occupational therapy in most if not all cases to help you return to normal function or perhaps with time and the right care, beyond normal and to a new level of health.

There are many options out there for you to choose who you feel gives the best path to full health and wellness.

That should always be your choice.

Encompass Rehabilitation Hospital of Toms River is one of those such places where you can choose to go and find your way towards recovery.

“We are a 98-bed (including 64 private rooms) acute rehabilitation hospital and we are one of 16 acute care rehabilitation hospitals in the state of New Jersey, not every community is fortunate enough to have this level of care available to them as Ocean County is,” Patty Ostaszewski, the CEO of Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Toms River said.

They offer a number of services to patients coming in with conditions such as amputee, burns, hip fracture, multiple sclerosis, orthopedic, pulmonary/respiratory, stroke, spinal cord injury, pain management, neurological conditions, joint replacement, cardiac, brain injury, Parkinson’s disease and others.

The therapy offered here is for any number of people of any age.

“We have a patient here in his 30’s who had a terrible motorcycle accident, we’ve treated patients in their 20’s that were recovering from Covid, we have had young patients who’ve had neurological conditions that we’ve assisted in their recovery, so anywhere from age 18 to generally we have a patient at all times in their 100’s. We have a 98-year old here today that is getting ready to go home,” Ostaszewksi said. “We are not a nursing home, we are licensed as a hospital and what that means is we meet all the criteria by the joint commission and by the state of New Jersey as Community Medical Center, Ocean Medical Center…the same criteria and standards are held to our operations.”

For whatever conditions you are there for, you’ll receive the care you need to find recovery.

“There is always a physician on site. We have multiple specialists who come here as well…a cardiologist, a pulmonologist, typically the same doctors that rotate at a hospital come here,” Dr. Padma Adusumilli, Medical Director at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Center of Toms River said. “They (patients) receive physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy based on their needs and their diagnoses here. They’re assessed by the therapist soon after admission and an individual, independent therapy program is formulated for the patient. It’s not a cookie cutter rehab but rather more geared towards the patients individual needs.”

For the most part, you’d receive therapy on just about a daily basis and plenty of follow-up as well.

If you are in need of care and this is a place you want to possibly go to for therapy, you can do so right from home in most cases.

“We can take patients right from home, right from a doctors office, from the emergency departments in the area or most typically it’s from an acute care hospital in the area. Generally, what happens, is either the case manager or social worker will work with the patient and make that referral or the primary physician at the hospital or one of the consultants may make the recommendation that the patient requires acute impatient rehabilitation,” Ostaszewski said. “We want to make sure patients in our community are served at the right level of care at the right time in their recovery.”

Even if it’s not you and perhaps a family member instead, you may be able to make that request on their behalf.

Under normal circumstances, outside of a Covid world and again soon, you’ll be able to participate in group therapy activities in certain cases.

“Sometimes our cardiac group will have more than one patient in it,” Ostaszewski said. “We are getting back to doing some groups but often times our patients deserve that one on one time with their physical, occupational or speech therapist but we do have groups.”

She adds that sometimes those groups form on their own when one patient sees another doing the same thing and they join in together.

There has been some upgrades and construction done of late as well and more final touches are on the way.

Soon coming to Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Toms River will be special rooms for dialysis treatments.

“We are waiting for the New Jersey Department of Health to complete a licensing survey so that we will be able to operate the final rooms in the hospital as well as this final phase which includes a three suite dialysis center so we will be able to provide on-site dialysis to any patient that comes here,” Ostaszewski said.

They will also soon be able to provide blood transfusions there.

Whatever your physical or emotional needs, you’ll find all kinds of assistance here.

“Today with all our seniors living longer and longer I think there comes a point that everyone is going to need some form of rehab outpatient or inpatient in some way or form,” Dr. Adusumilli said.

It is your choice where you go for rehab treatment.

“From the hospital, the case manager or social worker makes an electronic referral but the patient who is home can call the admissions office and they can ask for a free assessment. One of our rehab liaisons will do the assessment and if they qualify, they meet medical necessity and the criteria for an acute admission to our hospital, they can come in directly,” Solangie Pabon, Marketing Coordinator for Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Toms River said.
