Coronavirus Cases In Essex County: Weekly Town-By-Town Update – Patch.com

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Coronavirus cases continue to be reported in Essex County, according to statistics released Saturday (see totals for each town below). However, in a positive development, the county has moved from a “high” to “moderate” coronavirus activity level, state officials noted.

According to the state Department of Health’s most recent “COVID-19 Activity Level Report,” which is issued weekly, Essex County, along with others throughout New Jersey, dropped to the “moderate” level for the week ending on April 24. It was previously in the “high” level on April 17.

If a county is in the “orange” zone, it means it has a rate of 10 to 25 cases per 100,000 people. “Yellow” means the county has a rate 1 to 10 cases per 100,000 people.

If the overall activity is at a “orange” level, state officials say, school districts in those counties would have to take more serious steps — such as quarantining or even shutting down schools — if a child shows the symptoms of COVID-19.

“When it is high risk, there are some recommendations that we make together with local school boards,” said Edward Lifshitz, medical director for the state Department of Health.

ESSEX COUNTY LOCAL STATS

Overall, Essex County has seen 83,887 cumulative COVID-19 cases as of Saturday, with 2,608 deaths linked to the disease, according to the latest totals from county officials.

Essex County officials previously noted that “data cleaning” took place in the county’s reporting system on April 25 to “remove duplicate cases or errors.” The county’s cumulative case totals dropped significantly as a result, moving from 85,605 on April 24, to 82,949 on April 26.

Essex County officials released cumulative COVID-19 totals for each town and city on May 1, noting that their daily report may not match state or municipal totals (here’s why). Patch has included the U.S. Census’ most recent population estimates for each municipality.
