N.J. weather: Here’s how much snow fell in your county during the big winter storm – NJ.com

Many areas of New Jersey turned into a winter wonderland Wednesday night and Thursday morning as a strong coastal storm dumped nearly a foot of snow in some parts of the state and more than a half foot in many others.

Light snow is still falling in northern and central New Jersey as of 8 a.m., so some of the final snowfall totals will be going up a bit during the next few hours.

So far, the snow measured on the ground hasn’t been as high as most forecasters had predicted in northern New Jersey — with sleet pushing the numbers down — but it still has been one of the biggest snowstorms to hit the state in almost two years and has made a mess of many roads.

The heaviest snow totals have been concentrated mainly in the state’s northwestern counties of Morris, Sussex and Warren, where several towns picked up double-digit snowfall accumulations as of 8 a.m. Thursday.

Vernon Township had 12.3 inches of snow on the ground, Wantage and the Pellettown section of Frankford each reported 10.7 inches of snow, Holland Township reported 10.5 inches, Belvidere reported 10.4 inches and Jefferson measured in at 10.0 inches.

In the state’s northeastern region, Newark Liberty Airport in Essex County ended up with 11.4 inches of snow, and Harrison in Hudson County reported 10.2 inches.

For Newark, the 5.5 inches of snow that fell before midnight broke a daily record for the most snow ever to fall in the state’s largest city on Dec. 16. The National Weather Service said another 5.9 inches fell overnight and Thursday morning, giving Newark its overall storm total of 11.4 inches.

Here’s a roundup of the latest snowfall totals reported by the National Weather Service’s regional forecast office in New Jersey and New York regional office as of Thursday morning. Also included are some snow totals reported by the Community Collaborative Rain, Snow & Hail Network, based at Rutgers University.
