Livingston Justice Partners with Environmental Center for Kids Composting and Worm Lab – TAPinto.net

LIVINGSTON, NJ — In celebration of Environmental Justice Month and in recognition of the need to improve and maintain a healthy environment—especially for communities of color that are disproportionately impacted by pollution—the Livingston Justice community action group recently partnered with the Essex County Environmental Center to offer a kids’ composting class and worm lab.

During the virtual event, Livingston resident Heather Amendolara, a naturalist and educator at the Essex County Environmental Center in Roseland, taught a large group of elementary-age children how to reduce waste and better take care of the earth by educating them about composting and introducing them to the earthworms that make composting possible.

In advance of the class, Livingston Justice provided lab kits containing a magnifying glass, a vegan gummy worm, dissection tools and a dissection sheet to approximately 100 participating children from Livingston and surrounding communities. All participants had the unique opportunity to see how lab tools are used at the Essex County Environmental Center and were encouraged to take their magnifying glasses outside to observe real earthworms.

Since its recent establishment, Livingston Justice has hosted various educational events and activities for residents of all ages to further promote justice within the community.
