Murphy & Tucker Legislation to Allow Claiming & Disposal of Veteran Family Member Cremains Now Law

(TRENTON) – Allowing qualified veterans’ organizations to receive and bury the unclaimed cremated remains – referred to as cremains – of eligible spouses and dependents of veterans, legislation (A-2244) was signed into law Monday.

Upon the bill becoming law, sponsors Carol Murphy and Cleopatra Tucker issued the following statements:

“When a soldier goes off to war, family members endure long absences and often fear for their loved one’s safety as they await their return,” said Assemblywoman Carol Murphy (D-Burlington). “This law recognizes their sacrifices and ensures their cremains will be accessible to those who want to help facilitate a proper burial as done with veterans.”

“No one’s cremains should be left unclaimed in a funeral home, especially those of a family member who showed unconditional love and support to a veteran during their lifetime,” said Assemblywoman Cleopatra Tucker (D-Essex). “Their dedication deserves acknowledgement, which is why this law will allow eligible spouses and children to be buried in or transferred to veterans’ memorial cemeteries.”
