Rally Planned In Newark After Child Shot: ‘We Must Be Outraged’ – Patch.com
NEWARK, NJ — Newark residents and activists are planning a rally on Thursday to condemn a recent shooting that wounded three people, including a 2-year-old child.
According to a news release, the Newark AntiViolence Coalition (NAVC) and the Brick City Peace Collective (BCPC) are uniting to spearhead a rally at 5 p.m. It will take place at the Georgia King Village Housing Complex, 250 Georgia King Village.
The NAVC and BCPC released a joint statement about Thursday’s event:
“Although violence has been going down in the last several years, whenever it occurs it continues to be a traumatic and unnerving ordeal for its victims and for the surrounding neighborhood. That this particular incident made a victim out of a 2-year-old girl unnerved the entire city. Thankfully the victims appear to be headed towards recovery.”
Newark authorities are offering a $5,000 reward to help find the person or persons responsible for the shooting, which took place near the 100-block of Cabinet Street on Jan. 28. Three people were injured: an adult man, an adult woman and a 2-year-old girl.
Authorities said that anyone with information about the shooting can call the division’s 24-hour crime stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). Anonymous tips can also be made using the police division’s website at: www.newarkpd.org, or through its smartphone app.
Thursday’s rally will be led by NAVC vice chair Natasha Allen, whose family was personally affected by the shooting. It will also include Minister Abdul Haqq Muhammad of the Nation Of Islam, Lawrence Hamm, former U.S. Senate candidate and head of the People’s Organization for Progress, and former area Panther leader, Zayid Muhammad.
“Mayor Ras Baraka echoed the sentiments of many when he said we must be outraged when violence like this occurs, just as we are outraged when police violence takes place,” the groups said, referring to a shooting that claimed the life of Carl Dorsey on New Year’s Day.
