Bageriet Provides A Taste of Sweden in Hackensack – BestofNJ.com

Outside of Swedish meatballs, how much do you know about Swedish cuisine? Bageriet, a new bakery in Hackensack, aims to introduce Bergen County residents to Swedish – and other European – baked goods. The owners describe the spot as a Swedish bakery café with a touch of France.

The 1,000-square foot Bageriet sells goods that owners Susanne Bahdo and her husband, Ervin, bake in house. Susanne’s previous experience owning a café taught her everything she needed in order to pursue her current passion. In fact, Bageriet now occupies the same space as the former café, serving as a natural transition of sorts.“I decided to make it my dream bakery,” Susanne says.

What’s Baking at Bageriet

When you visit Bageriet, you’ll find quality, artisanal European baked goods that are healthy and low in sugar. “We always bring in different items and yummy desserts,” Susanne adds, though the full menu is still in progress. Follow them on Facebook for menu updates.

Of course, the bakery plans to highlight Swedish desserts such as cinnamon rolls and cardamom rolls. They also sell roll cakes and regular cakes. “Everything is made in house, even the bread,” Susanne adds. In addition, Bageriet offers pastries, cookies, cakes, doughnuts, bread, and lunch items. They make vegan and gluten-free treats, as well. Meanwhile, beverage choices feature bubble tea and coffee.

From the outside, you’ll notice seasonal outdoor seating for up to 50 guests on the sidewalk. Since the café is on a corner, the whole corner is available for outdoor dining. Bageriet seats 24 inside at full capacity, and Susanne describes the interior as “cool and rustic with a modern twist.”

About the Owner

Susanne loves traditional baked goods, as has since childhood living in her native Sweden. Her love of cooking and baking has led to a lifelong career in the restaurant business. In fact, the Bahdos have been cooking and baking their whole lives, delighting friends with dishes (and without recipes).

When Susanne immigrated to America, she found a lack of Swedish bakeries and quality baked goods in Northern New Jersey. To solve this, she recruited bakers trained at French culinary schools to work with her in the kitchen. “It’s a small mom and pop business that we hope will support our children,” Susanne explains. “I’m a hard-working woman that loves to give and make the best products around.”
