MONTCLAIR, NJ – Recently, the Junior League of Montclair-Newark (JLMN) gifted a local non-profit with a grant award totaling $12,500.

Education, advocacy, stability, productivity and supporting foster youth are all hallmarks of the JLMN, according to leaders.

“This year, to honor and celebrate the League’s history of service to women, children and the Essex County community, the League committed to engage in 100 Good Deeds of service in Essex County,” JLMN staff said.

During these most unprecedented times, supporting young people, especially those who have aged out of foster care, with provisions for secondary education was most important to the League.

Through a community partnership with Embrella NJ, a not-for-profit organization that specializes in working with foster families, young people in foster care and those young adults who have recently aged out of foster care in NJ, the Junior League of Montclair-Newark established unique centennial year based scholarships to support the Embrella youth.

The League eagerly agreed to provide both Academic Scholarships (“Margaret Campbell Harris Awards”) and Opportunity Grants (“Centennial Opportunity Awards”). The first of four award grants yielded 8 scholarships—5 Margaret Campbell Harris Awards and 3 Centennial Opportunity Awards totaling $12,500.

Embrella is a foster care nonprofit that provides services, support and training opportunities for foster, adoptive and kinship families, and others having the responsibility for and/or the interest in the well-being of children. They also offer scholarship programs and one-on-one foster adolescent coaching.

“The Junior League is thrilled and honored to be able to play a small part in supporting and enhancing the lives of these young people of Embrella NJ” reported JLMN President Heather LeClair.
