A Chef who Helped Feed the Homeless Shot and Killed During Last Days of 2020 – TAPinto.net

EAST ORANGE, NJ — Charisse L. Ates, 38, of East Orange was fatally shot on December 30th in the area around 121 South 8th Street in Newark. She was transported to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 9:37 pm.

Charisse was a known chef who would also feed the homeless. Friends and family are telling her story of being a loving person across social media. 

Tahirah Ates said Charisse was, “always looking out for other people, wanting to feed them, wanting to make sure they had a place to stay.”

“She was very concerned about those who were in need. She would always feed the homeless. She was always giving and a loving child… We took great loss. We took another great loss.” said a friend to Charisse, Deynia Edwards. 

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announced that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is investigating a fatal shooting.

No arrests have been made. The investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office tips line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432. Calls will be kept confidential.
