Ninety-one residents had died of the coronavirus in six towns in western Essex County as of Thursday, Aug. 20, according to Essex County data.

Forty-seven deaths were reported in West Caldwell, 16 in Fairfield and 12 in Roseland. Caldwell had 10 deaths, North Caldwell had four and Essex Fells had two, according to the county data.

The number of deaths has been nearly flat for the past two months. In some cases, the number of deaths in a municipality has fallen as residences of those who died are confirmed.

West Caldwell had 298 residents with the new virus, Fairfield had 151 and Caldwell had 123. Eighty-seven cases were reported in Roseland, 47 in North Caldwell and 29 in Essex Fells as of Thursday.

Deaths and cases from concluded outbreaks no longer are included on the list; outbreaks are considered concluded after 28 days without a new case.

In a message to residents Friday, Aug. 14, West Caldwell Mayor Joseph Tempesta Jr. said there was one current case in the township’s general population. That person is home quarantined.

In the two skilled nursing facilities combined, there were no new cases in the past week, he said. One case each was reported in Cranes Mill and in Hackensack Meridian Health Center.

“Tragically, though, since the beginning of the pandemic, we have had 44 deaths in those facilities,” he added.

At the North Caldwell mayor and council meeting Tuesday, Aug. 18, Mayor Joseph Alessi said no cases were found among 200 people tested by Essex County in the borough Thursday, Aug. 6. The county also offered free testing in Essex Fells on Thursday, Aug. 20.

Both North Caldwell and Roseland held summer camps for children this summer, with no cases of the virus reported.
