The fatal shooting took place around 4 p.m. Tuesday near St. Paul Avenue, according to a joint statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Department of Public Safety.

Newark police officers arriving on the scene found the victim, Dedric Bracey, 22 of Newark, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders transported Bracey to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:35 p.m.

“Information developed at the scene indicated that the suspects fled in a dark-colored SUV,” authorities said.

Shortly after the shooting on Saint Paul Avenue, detectives from the New Jersey State Police observed a vehicle in Irvington which matched the description of the vehicle involved in the shooting, police said.
